CHT’S ADULT ACTING AND COMEDY IMPROV CLASSES RESCHEDULED
Church Hill Theatre has rescheduled the adult education classes that were originally scheduled in January, including an adult acting workshop, taught by acclaimed professional actress Rena Cherry Brown, and a comedy improvisation workshop, taught by CHT’s Executive Producing Director Steven J. Arnold.
Both workshops will be offered together in an introductory, one-day workshop scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2008 from 10 AM to 1 PM. The cost of this one day, trial version of the classes is $25.00 and it will give participants a chance to try out the class, get a sense of the instructors, and help potential students decide if the 8 week course is right for them.
The full 8 week course versions of the classes will begin on May 3, 2008. The tuition for each course is $200.00, which covers the total cost for the entire 8 week period.
“Acting for Adults: Monologue and Scene Study” is an acting workshop for performers of all levels of experience including beginners. The workshop is an exploration of each actor's own level of experience through auditioning, character development, script analysis and scene study. Each student in the 8 week version of the course will take away an audition-ready monologue and will work with another student to present a finished scene to the class. The one day trial version of “Acting for Adults: Monologue and Scene Study” is scheduled for April 12, 2009 at 10 AM. The full eight week course, which begins on May 3, 2008, will take place every Saturday from 10:00 AM to Noon.
Teaching “Acting for Adults: Monologue and Scene Study” is acclaimed Maryland actress Rena Cherry Brown. Since earning her degree in Theatre Education at Maryland University, she has appeared in over 100 productions in 36 years in Maryland, Northern Virginia and on the professional stage in Washington D.C. She was awarded the prestigious Helen Hayes Award in Washington for her portrayal of Claire in American Century Theatre’s A Delicate Balance. Other professional stage credits include shows with The Shakespeare Theatre, Rep Stage, Horizons Theatre, Keegan Theatre, Olney Theatre, Wooly Mammoth and The Washington Shakespeare Company where she was a company member and was best known for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Locally, she has appeared with Tred Avon Players in Oxford, CAPA in Easton and at Church Hill Theatre, where she recently played Eleanor of Aquitaine in The Lion in Winter to great acclaim and is currently charming audiences as Miss Daisy in Driving Miss Daisy. She is also currently preparing to reprise her role as Dame Alice Moore, widow of Sir Thomas Moore, in local playwright Margaret Barton Diggs’ one-woman play Alice at Dawn.
“Introduction to Comedy Improvisation” is a workshop meant to introduce performers into the style of improv most people know from TV’s Whose Line Is It, Anyway? The workshop will immerse participants in the mechanics and performance techniques for many traditional and new improv games. The one day trial version of “Introduction to Comedy Improvisation” is scheduled for April 12, 2009 at 10 AM. The full eight week course, which begins on May 3, 2008, will take place every Saturday from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM.
Teaching “Introduction to Comedy Improvisation” is Steven J. Arnold. Mr. Arnold, a professional actor, director and playwright who accepted the position of Church Hill Theatre's Executive Producing Director this past April, received his theatre degree from The Ohio State University and has amassed over 70 production credits in twenty-five years. He has held several staff positions with different theatres, including his post as the Artistic Director of The Mansfield Playhouse, in Mansfield, Ohio, where he directed 6 productions per season for their Main Stage, developed new works for their black box theatre stage and co-founded the comedy improvisation group “Under The Influence” in 1998. This group remains active and successful with performances throughout Ohio. In 2004, he founded a second improv group, ScrewLoose, in Canton, Ohio. He was originally mentored and instructed in improv comedy by Keith Reay, a graduate and performer of Second City in Detroit.
To register for one or both of these classes or for more information, contact the CHT office at 410-758-1331 between 10 AM and 5 PM Monday through Friday or visit the CHT website at www.churchhilltheatre.org.

WORLD CLASS MAGICIAN WAYNE ALAN TO APPEAR AT CHURCH HILL THEATRE MAY 3
World Champion Illusionist Wayne Alan will appear for one night only this Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 8:00 PM at Church Hill Theatre. Ticket prices are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids 12 and under. He will be presenting his one-man show of magic and illusion entitled "Intimate Magic." The show features lots of fun, comedy and audience participation.
Mr. Alan comes to CHT with a world class background in magic illusion and great success in competition on the world stage.
Every three years, magicians from around the world meet as part of the ‘Congress de la FISM’ (Federation International Society of Magic) for the world’s largest magician’s convention. It is here that they hold the “Olympics of Magic.” Five days of intense competition result in the crowning of world champions.
Wayne first entered the Olympics of Magic at the Congress de la FISM in
1973 in Paris, France. He did not place but was chosen to be on the TV special, The Wonderful World of Magic, hosted by Bill Bixby.
In 1976, he again competed, this time in Vienna, Austria. He came much closer to winning this time by coming in 4th, but only the top three received awards. In 1979 he decided to take a rest from competing.
But in 1982, he decided to re-enter the competition, this time held in Lausanne, Switzerland. Here, he won the coveted Gold Medal for Grande Illusion with an original illusion that even fooled his fellow magician competitors. He is the only American to ever win this most prestigious award in magic.
Wayne has appeared many times on national TV, including Entertainment Tonight, Good Morning America, ABC, NBC, and CBS Network News programs.
He has appeared with Oprah Winfrey, Larry King and Maury Povich as well as appearing nine times at the White House.
Wayne has written a number of books on magic for the public, which
includes: The Wayne Alan Book of Magic (1973), Make Smoking Disappear Magic Book (2001)-an anti-tobacco themed magic book for young people.
For magicians he also wrote The Magic of China (1989) and Patented Illusions-the World’s Best Protected Illusions (1990). He produced the Wayne the Wizard Magic Set (1973) that sold in toy stores, department stores and drug stores. He is presently designing a Golf Magic Set and a Cooking with Magic Set.
Wayne Alan is also the first magician to write a cookbook. It is titled Magical Meatless Meals-Famous Foods from Famous People and Places. It includes recipes from many of the wonderful restaurants and hotels that he has had the pleasure of dining at in his travels around the world. It also features recipes of favorite dishes of celebrities he has performed with. Magic tricks that can be performed at the dinner table are taught and sprinkled throughout the book.
To make reservations for Wayne Alan’s wonderful family-friendly performance of "Intimate Magic" on May 3, 2008 at 8:00 PM, call the Church Hill Theatre box office at 410-758-1331. Seats are limited to this one-night-only performance.

CHT TO AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SUMMER YOUTH THEATRE GREEN ROOM GANG
Steven J. Arnold, Church Hill Theatre Executive Producing Director, has announced that CHT will award scholarships to two in-need youths for participation in their summer Green Room Gang youth theatre workshop. A unanimous vote by CHT’s Board of Directors for Mr. Arnold’s proposal in the January board meeting has enabled the theatre to offer two scholarships to this summer’s camp.
“Church Hill Theatre’s endowment fund, which is held by the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, was created with an eye on education,” Mr. Arnold explained. “The fund’s interest income provides us with current and future opportunities to support students in need. We have always taken our role in community education very seriously and we have seen great results with Green Room Gang in developing cultural education opportunities for kids over the years. That it will now be even more accessible to kids who may not otherwise be able to participate for family financial reasons is a source of great pride and excitement for us here at Church Hill Theatre.”
Green Room Gang involves two theatre camps. Green Room Gang Senior is for ages 10 to 17 and begins June 18, 2008. Green Room Gang Junior is for ages 6 to 9 and begins June 30. The camps meet Mondays through Thursdays, the Senior troupe from 9 AM to 3 PM and the Junior troupe from 9 AM to Noon. Both camps produce and perform their own production during which the kids are immersed in many facets of theatre training by professional educators and their staff. The camp ends July 26 and culminates in three performances of the productions. Past productions have included The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Seussical Junior, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Go Fish and Bugs, among others.
Two scholarships will be awarded for Green Room Gang – one each for participation in Green Room Gang Senior and Junior. Scholarship forms must be in to the CHT office before or by April 11, 2008 for scholarship consideration. CHT’s Education Committee will make award determinations based 85% on need, as demonstrated by a narrative and support materials provided by a parent or guardian, and 15% on a narrative from the child, in which kids are asked to describe why they want to participate in the camp and what they hope to get from the experience. The award status for both scholarships will be announced to all applicants by May 9, 2008.
CHT has begun accepting Green Room Gang enrollment and scholarship applications for the 2008 summer camp. For more information or applications, please call 410-758-1331 between 10 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

Celebrate the magnificence of the chesapeake bay
during our 10th annual wade-in festival
held on the first saturday in june
During 2007's Wade-In Festival,
guests gather along the shore in anticipation of the ceremonial wade.
During this annual family festival, held each each year on the first Saturday of June, the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center invites guests to celebrate the magnificence of the Chesapeake Bay! Come explore native watershed habitats with guided canoe and kayak tours, trail hikes, seining, children's programs and more. The event is free, thanks to support from local organizations.
Guests are invited to bring picnic baskets and dine under the big tent at Lake Knapp. From 11 to 2 p.m., the tent is spirited, with music from the Bay Country Gentlemen!
Mid-day, local politicians lead guests to the Salt Panne, where we all wade-into the bay together to examine the condition of our region’s greatest natural resource.
While on campus, be sure to visit the education pavilion, where river keepers, tributary teams, oyster gardeners, native landscapers, and others are on hand to answer questions about the health of your nearest tributary. Learn what you can do to advance environmental health to benefit us now, and for future generations.
The objective is for guests to have a marvelous time exploring the bay watershed, leaving with a greater awareness of how they can improve bay health, so that we pass along natural resources to the next generation enhanced, not impaired, in value.

*CASTING CALL AT CHT May 10th 2 to 4 pm
(Discussion of concept and search for character types)
And now for something completely different....
For CHT’s annual fundraising event, we will be presenting an original, audience participation performance written by our own Earl Lewin. The performance, in a style reminiscent of "Tony and Tina's Wedding,"
depicts the hilarious wedding reception of Helen Church and Clyman D. Hill.
The fundraiser/performance will occur at the Centreville Fire Hall on October 18th, 2008 for One performance only.
The reception performance will consist of six skits featuring members of the wedding party and their families. The skits are written and directed by Earl Lewin.
Characters are:
Dr. Ober D. Hill, father of the groom . . . rich; dignity personified.
Iona Hill, mother of the groom . . . classy but dominated by her live-in mother in law.
Lotta Hill, grandmother of the groom . . . thinks she is the royal family.
Clyman D. Hill, the groom . . . trapped by a clever girl.
Loudin Church, father of the bride . . . got no class.
Neva N. Church, mother of the bride . . . outspoken and crude.
Helen Church, the bride . . . she landed a rich one and she isn’t going to let him get away.
Oliver Too, a groomsman . . . secretly in love with the bride.
Izzie Foreal, a groomsman . . . secretly in love with the groom.
Claude Izwayup, the best man . . . knows everybody’s dirty little secrets and uses them to toast the lovely couple.
Ophelia Diss, bridesmaid . . . buxom lass with a tendency to be very friendly with the men.
Meta Guy, . . . very pregnant. Who’s the father?
Wanda Little, . . . Ophelia, Meta and Helen’s best drinking buddy.
Eli Zalot ,. . . Justice of the Peace.
Linus Upp, . . . the wedding planner and activities director.
Candice B. True, . . . Society columnist for the local paper.
Phillip DeGlass . . . the French Ambassador’s son.
Rehearsals start in August. No conflicts with other CHT shows. You will have to know your character thoroughly and interact extemporaneously with wedding guests throughout the evening.
